Some people afflicted by spiritual trials, such as magic, evil eye, or possession by jinn, mistakenly believe that these issues can be treated using counter-magic or by seeking the assistance of jinn. As a result, some turn to magical rituals or visit fraudulent sorcerers, hoping to cure their afflictions. They may wrongly assume that magic used with good intentions is harmless and can even be beneficial, whereas magic with evil intentions is harmful.
This is a serious misconception. Resorting to magic for healing does not solve the problem; rather, it exacerbates it, multiplying the harm. An individual afflicted by a single act of magic may end up under the influence of multiple spells, plunging into a continuous cycle of suffering. Moreover, engaging in magic destroys one’s faith, leaving a person with nothing of their religion if they commit such acts.
It is essential for every Muslim to understand that there is no such thing as “good” or “beneficial” magic. Magic itself is inherently disbelief (kufr), as it involves invoking the devil, violating the sanctity of religion, idolizing false deities or leaders of disbelief, and desecrating the Word of Allah. Magic cannot exist without these acts of disbelief. Therefore, it is impossible for magic to be truly noble or harmless. How can an act that is intrinsically disbelief and enmity towards religion ever be considered good?
Allah Almighty warns us about magic in the Qur’an:
“And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But they do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].’ And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102)
Furthermore, the Qur’an confirms that seeking the help of jinn is harmful and cannot lead to any beneficial outcome:
“And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they increased them in burden.” (Surah Al-Jinn 72:6)
Thus, evil cannot be treated with evil, and relying on criminal jinn for noble purposes is impossible. No righteous, God-conscious jinn would ever assist a sorcerer or participate in magic. Only the lowest of the jinn—those corrupt and evil—would engage in such acts.
In summary, any attempt to use magic or jinn as a means of healing only worsens the problem, leads to spiritual corruption, and contradicts the clear guidance of Allah. True Islamic healing lies in reliance upon Allah, recitation of the Qur’an, supplication, and following the prophetic methods of Ruqyah.
