What is the meaning of the Hadith “A dream is on a bird leg…”

It was narrated that Muhammad, the messenger of Allah, (peace be upon him) said:

“A dream is on a bird leg; if it is interpreted, it will come true…”

An authentic Hadith, narrated by Al-Termidhi and Abi-Dawoud

The Hadith is describing a particular type of dreams, which is the true dream from Allah. The true dream is the one from Allah, which is mostly symbolic, and has an interpretation that applies to incidents in reality.

Saying that a dream is on a bird leg is a figurative language in the form of a simile. It means that when one has a true dream, it is still ‘unstable’ like the bird leg on a surface, or in other words the dream will not come true until interpreted correctly according to the Islamic method of dream interpretation. If the dream is interpreted correctly, the interpretation will be expected to come true but not the apparent incidents of the dream in most cases.

In general, the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wanted to teach his companions that what one experiences in a dream is, mostly, symbolic, and is has no meaning itself, but it bears an the real interpretation, which is the true meaning and the real benefit of these dreams.
