Is it possible to distinguish between a true and a false dream?

Sometimes, I have many dreams but I could not know if they are true or false dreams? Is there any criterion to know it?

Answer

First, the true dream is the meaningful and interpretable dream from Allah, while the false dream is the meaningless dream from the devil or the brain.

Sometimes, it easier to tell the true and the false dreams apart. But in other cases, it is more difficult because they could be so confusing.

Though, there are general signs of a true dream such as dreaming of Islamic religious events like mosques, the Noble Quran, or the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Such religious dreams are mostly true because the devil does not like to let you have this type of dreams.

Also, a true dream should be clearer and more interconnected, unlike the false dream which may include various scenes or events that seem to have no connection.

In several cases, a dream during or after an Islamic religious practice (prayer, fasting, hajj, duaa, etc.) is mostly true.

In addition, after a true dream, the dreamer should have a unique inner feeling that his/her dream has a meaning. Thus, it is not unusual for me to receive an email from a dreamer that starts by: I have had a strange or an unusual dream…

A sad or a horrible dream is false in many cases, but sometimes it could be true and may warn the dreamer of some expected harm.

Anyway, take it as a rule : if you are a practicing Muslim with correct faith and good deeds, most of your dreams should be true, but if not, some of them may be true and some may be false.

For me as a dream interpretation analyst who dealt with thousands of dreamers, I have developed a growing sense to distinguish between the true and the false dream. Yet, Allah is the best helper in all cases.
