Is it correct to interpret dreams by the verses of the Quran?

Question

We usually read or listen to Muslim dream interpreters saying that they interpret dreams with the verses of the Noble Quran? was it proven correct to interpret dreams with the Quran? Does it have any evidence in the law of Islam?

Answer

Well, that is a good question, but it is also a big one. 

In brief, there is evidence that the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) interpreted dreams by the figurative expressions in the Quran. 

For example: 

1. In Sahih Al-Bukhari a Hadith by Abdullah Ibn Salam: 

“(In a dream) I saw myself in a garden, and there was a pillar in the middle of the garden, and there was a handhold at the top of the pillar. I was asked to climb it. I said, “I cannot.” Then a servant came and lifted up my clothes and I climbed (the pillar), and then got hold of the handhold, and I woke up while still holding it. I narrated that to the Prophet (ﷺ) who said, “The garden symbolizes the garden of Islam, and the handhold is the firm Islamic handhold which indicates that you will be adhering firmly to Islam until you die” [Chapter 91-Dream interpretation-Hadith number 23].

In the end of the mentioned Hadith, the prophet interpreted the handhold by the firm handhold mentioned in the Quran (Alorwato Alwothka) in the verse: “And he who rejects false deities and believes in Allah has grasped a firm handhold which will never break”. [2-256].

The prophet interpreted the handhold in the dream by the firm handhold mentioned in the verse, which stands for Islam. He told him that he will be adhering to Islam until death.

Another example

2. In Sahih Al-Bukhari a Hadith by Abi Said Al-Khodrey

“I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “While I was sleeping, the people were presented to me (in a dream). They were wearing shirts, some of which were merely covering their (chests). and some were a bit longer. `Umar was presented before me and his shirt was so long that he was dragging it.” They asked, “How have you interpreted it, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” He said, “Religion.” [Chapter 62-The merits of ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab’-Hadith 6]

In the mentioned Hadith the prophet interpreted wearing the garment in the dream by abiding by the religion. 

In the Quran there is a simile between piety and the garment in the verse: 

“And the garment of piety – that is best” (7:26).
