Unseen Dangers Explained: Magic, Evil Eye, and Jinn Possession from Islamic Sources – Part 2

Episode 2: The Ruling of Islam on Magic and Its Origins

(Part of the series: Unseen Dangers Explained – Magic, Evil Eye, and Jinn Possession)

7. What is the Islamic ruling on magic and magicians?

Magic (sihr) is considered an act of disbelief (kufr) in Islam. Allah (ﷻ) says:

“But the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102]

He also says:

“They surely knew that whoever purchased the magic would have no share in the Hereafter.”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102]

Magic is a harmful and forbidden science. Learning or teaching it is strictly prohibited.

📜 8. What is the origin of magic? How did it begin on Earth?

Magic is a harmful form of speech or practice that was revealed as a trial and test through two angels in Babylon: Hārūt and Mārūt.

They taught it to people only after warning them that it was disbelief and a trial from Allah.

Allah (ﷻ) says:

“…and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon—Hārūt and Mārūt. But they would not teach anyone unless they said, ‘We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.’”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102]

Magic was therefore a test from Allah, to distinguish between those who obey and those who disobey.

😈 9. What is the relationship between devils and magic?

Since magic is a hidden and deceptive way to harm others and turn people away from the path of Allah, the devils adopted it as a tool of corruption. They teach it and support those weak in faith who seek to practice it.

Allah (ﷻ) clearly states:

“But the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102]

🎯 10. What is the purpose of magic? What are its motives?

The main goal of magic is to cause harm and suffering. The damage may appear in several forms:

  • 🕋 Spiritual: Misguidance, inclination to sin, or distance from the remembrance of Allah
  • 🧠 Psychological: Depression, forgetfulness, confusion, or madness
  • 🏥 Physical: Pain, weakness, illness, fatigue, or delusion
  • 🏘️ Social: Isolation, family disputes, hatred between spouses, or delay in marriage
  • 💰 Economic: Hatred toward work, loss of clients or opportunities in trade

Magic is designed to break, weaken, or mislead people in critical aspects of their lives.

🤲 May Allah protect us all from the evil of magic and those who practice it.
