One of the most critical mistakes some Muslim spiritual healers (Raqis) make during Ruqyah (Islamic spiritual treatment) is neglecting to sincerely praise Allah, glorify Him, and humbly supplicate using all the correct Islamic methods of du‘a and Tawassul (see the Islamic Sunni explanation of this term below).
Every prayer (du’a) for healing should be grounded in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah—or at least fully aligned with their guidance. This significantly increases the chances of the du‘a being accepted. It should include calling upon Allah by His Most Beautiful Names, invoking His Mercy through righteous deeds, and employing all legitimate forms of supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
Why is this so important?
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was afflicted by a strong case of black magic, Allah eventually healed him. But as narrated by the mother of believers, sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the key turning point in his recovery was:
“He kept praying and praying.” (praying here means making du’a)
This highlights the immense power of heartfelt du‘a—not as a ritual recitation, but as a deep, urgent plea for divine help.
In addition to sincere supplication, a proper diagnosis is essential before starting any Ruqyah session. This involves asking detailed questions to determine the type, source, and intensity of the spiritual condition. Not all cases are the same—therefore, the selection of Qur’anic verses and du‘as must be tailored accordingly. What works for one case may not work for another.
Finally, after the session, it is crucial to ask the patient about their experience:
- What did they feel emotionally or physically during specific verses or prayers?
- Did certain parts of the recitation trigger strong reactions or sensations?
These insights are often powerful clues that guide the healer toward a more precise understanding of the affliction—and help them focus future sessions on the most effective verses and supplications.
Remember: true healing is from Allah alone. But following the prophetic method with sincerity and knowledge is the most blessed path to that healing, insha’Allah.
Note: What exactly is Tawassul?
Tawassul refers to seeking nearness to Allah by using a “means” (wasilah) when making du‘a. While some forms of Tawassul are permissible and supported by the Qur’an and Sunnah, others are clearly not allowed in Islam.
Permissible forms of Tawassul include:
- Calling upon Allah using His Most Beautiful Names and Attributes.
- Presenting one’s good deeds when asking for Allah’s mercy.
- Requesting a living righteous person to make du‘a on your behalf (under correct conditions).
However, the following forms are not permissible:
- Calling upon the dead to intercede, such as saying, “O Prophet, heal me” or “O saint, protect me”
- Inventing forms of supplication not based on authentic Islamic sources
- Seeking help through the status or honor (jah) of the Prophet ﷺ, such as saying: “O Allah, I ask You by the status of Your Prophet” — because this was not taught nor practiced by the Prophet ﷺ or his companions, despite their deep love and reverence for him.
In Islam, du‘a should always be directed to Allah alone, without intermediaries in the prayer itself. Even when honoring the Prophet ﷺ, we are instructed to send salawat (blessings), not to call upon his status as a means of supplication.
Using the correct forms of Tawassul during Ruqyah is not only more effective but also keeps the healing process firmly within the boundaries of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
