- What Is the Difference Between Waking Consciousness and Dream Consciousness?
- Source of Awareness
While wakefulness relies on the five senses for perception, these senses become largely inactive during sleep. Awareness in dreams stems from a different, non-physical source.
- Limits of Perception
Waking perception is bound by physical laws—sight, hearing, and move-ment have natural limits. In dreams, these constraints dissolve. One may fly, meet the dead, or witness scenes beyond worldly possibility.
- Control and Will
Awake, a person can choose how to act. In dreams, conscious control is minimal. Events unfold without deliberate intention.
- Interpretation of Perception
In waking life, things are taken at face value. In dreams, perceptions are often symbolic—a ship might represent rescue, a snake may suggest danger or betrayal.
- What Are the Sources of Dreams?
Dreams originate from three primary sources:
- From Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He)
As a form of guidance or communication.
- From the devil (the sworn enemy of mankind)
Intended to cause fear, confusion, or spiritual harm.
- From the human self (nafs)
Arising from one’s thoughts, emotions, desires, or unresolved concerns.
