Episode 8: How to Treat Magic and the Role of Ruqyah
30. How is magic treated?
Although treatment may vary from case to case, the approach to breaking magic usually revolves around the following steps:
- Supplication (Dua): This is the most important step because magic is an unseen matter known only to Allah. The affected person does not know who did it, how it was done, or where it is. Therefore, turning to Allah is the key to removing this harm.
- Ruqyah (Recitation of Quran and Prophetic Supplications): Since magic is evil speech and actions, it can only be countered by the words of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). Allah says: “We send down in the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers…” (Quran 17:82).
- Using natural remedies praised in the Quran and Sunnah: Such as dates, honey, olive oil, black seed, and Zamzam water. These can be consumed, applied, or combined with treatment under a doctor’s advice if needed.
- Purified water with Quranic recitation: Water that has been recited upon can be used for drinking, washing the body, or sprinkling in the home for protection.
31. What is Ruqyah and what is its ruling?
Ruqyah is a permissible form of spiritual treatment using Quranic verses, authentic Prophetic supplications, and lawful prayers. Scholars agree that Ruqyah is allowed for both physical and spiritual illnesses, provided it is free from any form of shirk (polytheism) or unlawful practices.
The best form of Ruqyah comes from the Quran, authentic hadith, and lawful supplications in clear language. It must not include strange words, unproven formulas, or superstitious practices.
32. How is Ruqyah performed?
Ruqyah is usually done by a knowledgeable person, but any Muslim can perform it by reciting Quran and supplications near the patient. Physical contact is not necessary. The key is sincerity, correct intention, and reliance on Allah.
33. Can Ruqyah break magic completely?
Ultimately, the power to break magic is with Allah alone. Ruqyah weakens the effect of magic and harms the jinn involved, but completely breaking magic often requires removing or destroying the physical object or material used in the spell.
However, a believer should never despair. Allah is capable of removing harm in ways beyond our imagination. Many cases show that magic can disappear without finding its source because Allah willed it. Our duty is to take all lawful means while trusting Allah completely.
