30 Signs in Dreams That May Indicate Being Affected by Magic

Many Muslims believe that certain signs in dreams can indicate that a person is affected by magic (sihr). These signs often serve as warnings and reminders to seek protection and guidance from Allah. Here are 30 common symbols and experiences that could point to magical influence in dreams:

  1. Poisons – Seeing poison in a dream may indicate magic, as the Prophet (saw) said: “Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates every morning will be protected from poison and magic that day.” [Agreed upon]
  2. Snakes and Scorpions – These venomous creatures can symbolize harmful magic or attacks. Allah says about Pharaoh’s magicians: “Their ropes and staffs appeared to him as if they were moving by their magic.” [Taha:66]
  3. Impurities – Such as blood, feces, or urine. Sorcerers often use impurities in their spells.
  4. Dogs and Pigs – Considered impure animals, especially the black dog, which the Prophet (saw) called a devil [Muslim].
  5. Knots or Ties – Sorcerers blow into knots to cast spells. Allah says: “…and from the evil of the blowers in knots.” [Al-Falaq:4]
  6. Sorcerers and Devils – They are directly involved in magical works. Allah says: “But the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…” [Al-Baqara:102]
  7. Music, Singing, or Bells – The Prophet (saw) said: “The bell is the flute of the devil” [Muslim]. Music can sometimes indicate magical influence in dreams.
  8. Jews – Historically, some Jews practiced magic, such as Labid ibn Al-A’sam. Allah mentions: “…they followed what the devils recited during Solomon’s reign…” [Al-Baqara:102]
  9. Animals, Birds, and Sacrifices – Magical rituals sometimes involve slaughtering animals or birds to aid the spell.
  10. Pharaohs – As exemplars of ancient sorcery, seeing them may indicate magic. Allah says: “…they cast magic to frighten the people…” [Al-A’raf:116]
  11. Casting Objects – Seeing something thrown on someone or being affected by a thrown object may symbolize a magical attack.
  12. Harut and Marut – Angels mentioned in the Qur’an who taught magic as a trial [Al-Baqara:102].
  13. Wells – Magic in prophetic stories was sometimes buried in wells, e.g., the Prophet’s experience.
  14. Pain and Suffering – As a direct sign, recalling Prophet Ayyub’s supplication: “…Satan has touched me with hardship and torment.” [Sad:41]
  15. Harm and Injury – Dreams depicting physical or emotional harm may suggest magical influence.
  16. The City of Babylon – Mentioned in connection with magic in the Qur’an.
  17. Symbols with Double Meanings – Seeing one thing but perceiving it as another in a dream may indicate magic [Taha:66].
  18. Dark Night – Darkness in dreams may relate to magical harm [Al-Falaq].
  19. Graves – Since magic is often buried underground, graves may appear in related dreams.
  20. Abandoned or Desolate Places – Places where evil or devils gather.
  21. Toilets or Bathing Areas – The Prophet ﷺ taught seeking refuge from evil when entering such places [Agreed upon].
  22. Yawning – The Prophet ﷺ said yawning comes from Satan; controlling it is recommended.
  23. Falling or Being Low – Being at a lower place may relate to “lower magic” practices.
  24. Jinn – Whether Muslim or non-Muslim, jinn may be involved in assisting or alleviating magical effects.
  25. Disbelievers – Magic often involves impure acts [Al-Tawba:28].
  26. Physical Illness or Symptoms – Some symptoms may be linked to magical influence.
  27. Sahar or Pre-Dawn Time – The similarity of the word with “sihr” links it symbolically in dreams.
  28. Illusions of Action – Feeling you did something in a dream, but actually did not, as happened to the Prophet (saw) under magic.
  29. Anything Indicating Magic – Stories, people, places, books, or songs that seem linked to supernatural influence.
  30. Fire or Burning – Fire is considered the element of devils, and its appearance in dreams may indicate harm.
