Unseen Dangers Explained: Magic, Evil Eye, and Jinn Possession from Islamic Sources – Part 6

Episode 6: Understanding Jinn, Sorcery, and Protection Methods

23. What Are the Types of Jinn and Their Roles?

Jinn are beings created by Allah, similar to humans in that they live in communities and have different beliefs and behaviors. Some are righteous believers who worship Allah, while others are rebellious and evil.

According to authentic narrations, there are different categories of jinn:

  • Those who can fly through the air with wings.
  • Those who move on the ground, often in the form of animals such as snakes or dogs.
  • Those who travel and settle like humans.

Some jinn can even appear in the form of humans, as mentioned in the famous story of Abu Hurayrah in Sahih al-Bukhari, where a jinn appeared to him in the shape of a man.

Others are skilled divers and builders, as mentioned in the Qur’an:

And the devils [We subjected] – every builder and diver.” (Surah Sad: 37)

They may also appear in dreams in various forms, though they can never take the image of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as he said:

Whoever sees me in a dream has indeed seen me, for Satan cannot take my form.”

24. Why Do Some Sorcerers Use Impurities or Desecrate Holy Texts?

Sorcerers are among the most corrupt and misguided individuals. To gain the cooperation of evil jinn, they commit acts of extreme wickedness—sometimes involving impure substances or sacrilegious acts. These practices are not essential for magic to work, but they are used to attract and please the most malicious jinn, increasing the power and harm of the spell.

25. Can Magic Be Done Using Someone’s Photograph?

Yes, magic can sometimes be performed using a person’s photograph by writing incantations on it or piercing it with pins as a symbolic act. However, a photo is considered a weak source of personal trace. Stronger forms of magic typically involve substances directly linked to the body, such as hair, nails, sweat, or bodily fluids.

26. How Can You Protect Yourself from Magic?

Here are essential steps for safeguarding yourself:

  1. Daily du’as and Supplications: Recite morning and evening adhkar (protective supplications) from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Maintain prayers, obey Allah, and avoid sins.
  2. Eat Seven Ajwa Dates in the Morning: The Prophet (SAW) said:
Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning will not be harmed that day by poison or magic. (Muslim)
  3. Keep Righteous Company: Stay close to practicing Muslims and avoid bad influences.
  4. Be Careful with Food and Drinks: Do not consume food or drink prepared specifically for you by people you do not fully trust, even if they are relatives.
  5. Protect Your Personal Belongings: Do not leave personal items unattended or allow untrusted individuals access to your bedroom or private spaces.
  6. Avoid Unnecessary Conflicts: Hostility can lead some people to resort to harmful practices.
  7. Treat Household Staff Well: Many cases of harm are linked to mistreatment of servants or workers.
  8. Keep Blessings Private: Avoid boasting about your wealth or achievements. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“Seek help in fulfilling your needs by keeping them private, for everyone blessed is envied.”
  9. Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly check unused spaces, storage areas, and drains. Ensure there are no neglected spots where harmful objects could be hidden.
  10. Regular Ruqyah: Even if you are not afflicted, reciting ruqyah is a means of ongoing protection.
