34. Do jinn sometimes speak through the tongue of a person afflicted by magic? What is the reason behind this?
Not every person afflicted by sorcery has jinn speaking through them. Some victims of sorcery may not even feel that they are bewitched, let alone have jinn speak on their tongue. However, in some types of strong sorcery, the jinn may take control of the speech center in the brain or the vocal cords, and thus speak through the victim. At other times, a case of satanic possession may occur, where the jinn seize control of the speech centers and the throat. It must be emphasized that this may happen but does not necessarily occur, and it usually happens only in advanced cases of sorcery or possession.
35. What are the signs by which a sorcerer can be identified? And how do they disguise themselves?
A sorcerer is a great hypocrite by nature. In a Muslim society where sorcery is among the gravest sins—an act of disbelief that harms people and destroys lives—no one could openly practice it and still be socially accepted. For this reason, sorcerers always seek to disguise themselves (whether male or female).
Some people imagine that a sorcerer must look strange, surround themselves with statues, skulls, red lights, animal heads, scary candles, and incense, as depicted in old books or naïve films. In reality, this is often misleading. A sorcerer may appear before you as a religious man who prays, with Qur’anic verses displayed on the walls, using such symbols only for deception to mislead people into thinking they are blessed righteous ones or spiritual healers with access to hidden powers. They may even present themselves as refined, well-dressed, and perfumed individuals too.
Among the certain signs that expose a sorcerer are the following:
- Strangers, mostly women, frequently visit them, often carrying objects into their place and leaving without them. The reason for such continuous visits is usually unclear.
- They ask for the name of the victim’s mother. Allah (Exalted be He) says: “Call them by [the names of] their fathers…” (Qur’an 33:5). The devils, however, deal with people through the mother’s name, in opposition to divine law, under the assumption that the maternal lineage is more certain. Thus, a sorcerer must always ask for the mother’s name.
- They whisper or mumble incomprehensible words. A legitimate Qur’anic healer speaks clearly and audibly, reciting verses of the Qur’an and authentic supplications. In contrast, a sorcerer may start with Qur’anic verses to mislead, then switch to murmuring magical incantations in a low voice.
- They speak of strange matters far removed from Islamic teachings and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, such as astrology, horoscopes, cosmic forces, meditation, yoga, “energy” practices, numerology, divination, palm or coffee cup reading, and other so-called “spiritual sciences” that often conceal sorcery (we seek refuge in Allah).
- They may request bizarre items, such as specific animals, unusual herbs, or candles. Sometimes they take money and procure these items themselves to avoid raising suspicion.
- They may ask for personal belongings or traces of the targeted individual.
- Sorcerers may disguise themselves in different roles, including:
- A “Sufi sheikh” claiming supernatural blessings.
- A so-called spiritual healer or “transparent” mystic.
- A false Qur’anic healer.
- An astrologer or fortune-teller who links people’s destinies to stars and planets.
- A man claiming to communicate with jinn.
- A Kudiyya Zar woman, who organizes hysterical ritual dances with loud drumming, falsely believed to expel jinn. Such ceremonies may include acts of indecency, animal sacrifice for other than Allah, blood rituals, and satanic incantations—clear acts of disbelief and grave sins.
