Wine and Intoxication in Dreams

First: Meanings of Wine in Dreams

• Wine as a symbol of Satan and his deception
  Allah says: “Indeed, wine, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” (Al-Mā’idah 5:90)
• Symbol of sorcery, gambling, idolatrous rituals, and games of chance
  Including lottery, dice, and any act based on blind luck or unjust risk.
• Symbol of major sins such as adultery and murder
  The Prophet ﷺ said: “Avoid wine, for it is the mother of all evils.” (al-Nasā’ī)
• Symbol of curse and being expelled from Allah’s mercy
  The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its maker, the one for whom it is made, its carrier, and the one to whom it is carried.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmi‘)
• Symbol of bad choices and deviation from the natural disposition (fiṭrah)
  As in the hadith of the two vessels (milk and wine), when the Prophet ﷺ chose milk, Gabriel said: “You have chosen the natural disposition (fiṭrah).”
• Symbol of enmity and hatred between people, and turning away from the mention of Allah and prayer
  Allah says: “Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through wine and gambling and to avert you from the mention of Allah and from prayer.” (Al-Mā’idah 5:91)
• Symbol of heedlessness, dizziness, unconsciousness, and sleep.
• Symbol of foolishness, reckless behavior, and loss of reason.
• Symbol of perfumes and substances containing alcohol, or fruits used in its making.
• Symbol of relief from prison or finding a new opportunity
  As in the dream of Joseph’s companion: “Indeed, I saw myself pressing wine.” (Yūsuf 12:36)
• Symbol of medical anesthesia, illness, especially digestive problems.
• For a righteous woman, it may symbolize the khimār (head covering).
• Symbol of vinegar, yeast, and fermentation
  Wine turning into vinegar symbolizes repentance, healing, and divine guidance.
• Symbol of unlawful money and forbidden financial dealings such as usury.
• Symbol of an evil end or rejection of prayer
  The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever drinks it, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmi‘)
• Symbol of punishment
  As the Prophet ﷺ punished wine drinkers with forty lashes, and ʿUmar increased it to eighty.
• For pious people, it may symbolize patience, relief from worries, and lightening of hardships.
• Symbol of doubtful matters (shubuhāt)
  As in the hadith: “The lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters…” (Muslim)
• Symbol of a corrupt, seductive woman, or worldly temptation.
• Symbol of unlawful entertainment such as music.
• Symbol of liquid impurities such as blood, urine, or semen.
• For pious believers, it may symbolize good provision or the wine of Paradise
  Allah says: “And rivers of wine delicious to those who drink.” (Muḥammad 47:15)

Second: Meanings of Intoxication in Dreams

• Symbol of worries, suffering, and divine punishment.
• Symbol of the terrors of the Day of Judgment
  “On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people as if intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.” (Al-Ḥajj 22:1-2)
• Symbol of neglecting prayer or being unfit to pray
  Allah says: “Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying.” (Al-Nisā’ 4:43)
• Symbol of heedlessness and misguidance
  “Indeed, they are, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.” (Al-Ḥijr 15:72)
• Symbol of sorcery and delusion
  “They will say, ‘Our eyes have been covered. Rather, we are a people affected by magic.’” (Al-Ḥijr 15:15)
• Symbol of the pangs of death
  “And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.” (Qāf 50:19)
• Symbol of negligence, heedlessness, and turning away from faith.
