36. Is the story of the Prophet ﷺ being affected by magic true?
Yes, the story is authentic and agreed upon by both Al-Bukhari and Muslim in their Sahih collections. The story is that a Jew named Labid ibn al-A’sam cast a spell on the Prophet ﷺ by placing some hair in a comb and burying it in a well called Dhul ‘Arawan. The Prophet ﷺ, under the influence of this magic, would imagine that he had done certain things which he had not actually done. Eventually, Allah Almighty allowed His Messenger ﷺ to be cured by revealing the location of the magical act, after which it was removed and the well was filled in.
This story does not contradict the Prophet’s ﷺ infallibility. Allah protects His Messenger ﷺ from failing in conveying the message assigned to him, but infallibility does not necessarily prevent exposure to harm or distress caused by others’ words or actions.
37. What is the relationship of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) with magic?
The devils falsely attributed magic to Solomon (peace be upon him), claiming that he used magic to rule over humans and jinn, and thus accused him of being a magician. Allah, however, absolved him of this accusation, and the Qur’an attributes these lies to the devils. Allah says:
“Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…” [Al-Baqarah: 102]
38. What is the difference between magic (sihr) and demonic possession (mas)?
Magic causes specific harm to the person affected, but usually does not make them lose control over themselves or their body. Magic has a clear purpose and goal, and there are devils that serve it to achieve that goal only. For example, a married person under a “separation spell” may feel unjustified dislike or repulsion toward their spouse, sometimes without even being aware of the magic or the devils assisting it.
Demonic possession (mas), however, is a direct attack by jinn on the body that the affected person strongly feels. It may result in epilepsy, the jinn speaking through the person, or sensations of physical or sexual assault in dreams. We seek refuge in Allah from all of this.
